Kathrin Grotz, M.A.
Deputy Director, Institute for Museum Research, Staatliche Museen zu Berlin – Preussischer Kulturbesitz
Kathrin Grotz, M.A., has been Deputy Director of the Institute for Museum Research at Staatliche Museen zu Berlin – Preußischer Kulturbesitz since April 2020. Her current research focuses on innovative formats of knowledge and science communication, on evaluation and audience research as well as collections and object circulation with a focus on natural history. Kathrin has a strong interest in the recent historical transformations of the German museum landscape and the challenges museums currently face, with a special focus on sustainability issues. In addition, Kathrin is responsible for the statistical survey of all museums in Germany which is conducted every year by the Institute. Prior to that, Kathrin worked for almost two decades at the Botanic Garden and Botanical Museum of the Freie Universität Berlin, where she was responsible for numerous exhibitions as a senior curator and head of exhibitions and researched the role of models and dioramas in knowledge communication and the history of science. She studied recent history, ethnology and political science at the universities of Heidelberg and Albuquerque, New Mexico, and completed an academic traineeship at the Reiss-Engelhorn-Museen in Mannheim.
